Swim Team
Overview for Joining our Y’s SPY Swim Team
SPY is fun and competitive YMCA program for both the swimmer and the family. The following information will explain our basic training groups and the basic entry-level requirements are as follows:
- Beginner Group: 25 continuous yards of 2 competitive strokes
- Development Group: 50 continuous yards of 3 competitive strokes
- Advanced Group: 100 continuous yards of 4 competitive strokes
- Pre-Senior- Senior Level: 200 continuous yards of 4 competitive strokes
It is the head coach's decision to determine if a child is ready to participate on the swim team or to continue in swim lessons based on the swimmer's ability. It is important that a child remain in swimming lessons if they need more development of swim competitive strokes before trying out our swim team.
During workouts, stroke technique and skills will be monitored and refined. Competitive Swim Skills, Techniques, Terms, and Race Strategies will be taught based on SPY training groups’ objectives.

How does my child tryout for the team?
We have a swimmer evaluation appointment with a SPY Coach to help us place swimmer into appropriate training groups. Then, your swimmer is permitted for five consecutive practices to try our program out to see if SPY fits into your child's focus and life schedule. Our hope is that your family will come to an appropriate decision if SPY is a good fit in your child's life at this time. We have new swimmers joining at all age levels. You may contact our Head Coach, Mike Austin at 937 323-3781 or [email protected] to set up an appointment for swim evaluation and find out more about SPYNATION
What if your swimmer is involved in other sports?
Most of our swimmers participate in other activities, too. Our practices are usually offered four to six days a week to allow for more opportunities to participate. We appreciate communication about activities that may keep your swimmer from training.
Are meets held every weekend?
No, and it is up to you how many meets you enter based on your schedule. Our SPY Invitational is the required participation for all swimmers and our swimmer’s families mandatory meet work commitment.
SPY has has a strong history of tradition and competition in our community. Our Y’s program supports Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. Our Competitive Swim Program encompasses the values of Respect, Caring, Honesty, and Responsibility.
